Billabong was founded in 1973, when Australian surfer Gordon Merchant conceived the idea of manufacturing boardshorts designed specifically for surfing. Soon thereafter, Gordon and Rena Merchant began producing handmade boardshorts in their basement. They were tough as teak, able to withstand not only the elements, but also able to absorb the sort of punishment that local juniors Guy Omerod and Rabbit Bartholomew would put those first trunks through.

From those humble beginnings, Billabong was born. By the 1980's the enthusiastic response of Australian surfers to this quality apparel and the firms involvement in pro surfing put Billabong on the road to international fame. Today Billabong is one of the few true international brands in the surf industry.
